How is technology improving your set? DJmag investigates their Top 100 DJs…
DJ Magazine received an overwhelming international response to their recent Top 100 DJs poll, with an unprecedented 123,933 voters determining this year’s prestigious rankings. It was furthermore the second year that DJmag’s Top 20 VJs were publicised alongside the Top 100 DJs. Celebrating a long-standing army of artists, DJmag’s support of audio/visual unification in relation to ever-evolving club culture is highly influential in a digital age.
Expanding the creative opportunities available to artists throughout the world, Pioneer remains at the vanguard of setting new standards for digital D(V)J technology. It’s therefore reassuring to know that Pioneer’s name was repeated throughout DJmag’s exclusive interviews with the Top 100 again this year, chiefly in response to the key question, “how is technology improving your set?”
Format changes in the medium in which DJs work once more made a distinctive mark on the poll. With the introduction of Pioneer’s momentous CDJ-1000 series of CD players, countless vinyl junkies were weaned from wax. Speaking at the Amsterdam Dance Event following DJmag’s Top 100 revelations, the world’s new number one DJ, Paul van Dyk, voiced his views on the evolution of the artform, admitting he couldn’t see a future for vinyl, whilst going on to praise the live remixing skills of the young DJM-909-abusing Eddie Halliwell who achieved a healthy 17th positioning. Meanwhile, Tiesto, the poll’s former number one (now at 2) declared: "I've moved totally to CDs this year - vinyl is dead." A movement echoed by fellow Dutchmen Ferry Corsten (a non-mover at 5) who has also switched to using CDs. The poll also showed that its highest new entry (at 26), Infected Mushroom, use the CDJ-1000s, as do other newcomers to the Top 100, including Andy Moor (46) and the “100% digital” Ricky Stone (48).
Through utilising cutting edge digital technology, DJs can personalise tracks and create unique improvisational performances by remixing their output live to suit both the set and setting. This approach was endorsed by many of the Top 100. For example, Deep Dish (8) are “touring with a bank of Pioneer equipment", and James Zabiela (13) is obviously a renowned grand master on the CDJs and EFX-1000. Carl Cox (10) meanwhile remarked: "I have changed over to using three Pioneer CD players, EFX-1000 and a Cycloops sample machine and can now remix music and create more of my own sound live while I'm playing." In addition, dark prince of the edit, Steve Lawler (30) explained his digital DJ preferences. "Last September I converted entirely to CDs,” said Lawler. “So I'm using the CDJ-1000 along with the Pioneer EFX-1000. It's changed the whole way a DJ can mix, you can basically re-edit and remix tracks on the fly" Satisfaction seeker, Benny Benassi (22) was also exposed as an advocate of the live remix style of delivery. He told DJmag: "I'm fond of Pioneer stuff, their CD players, mixers, new FX unit. I like to remix tracks that were not originally club tracks, to be more original if I can"
Enchanted by the creative and practical benefits of CDs, how long will it now take for DJs to make the next digital leap, to DVD and mixing audio with the moving image? Transforming the DJ’s output into the realms of contemporary audiovisual art, the DVJ-X1 DVD player was singled out for attention in the poll by DJs incorporating imagery into their sets. These included Sander Kleinenberg (20), Bad Boy Bill (42) and Jeff Mills (64), while Marco V (16) made a special note of the DVJ’s precise synchronisation of sound and vision. He observed: "I've started using the Pioneer DVD players, which is a fantastic way to make the visuals really fit to the tracks." What’s more, changing the face of the DJ scene, the DVJ-X1 has also been embraced by many audiovisual artists in the Top 20 VJ poll, including Hexstatic (1) Addictive TV (2) and Eclectic Method (3), who all use it and the former two even helping to develop the groundbreaking unit!
