This month we start with a monthly interview with one of our TFM deejays. For this first interview we asked Amex, the Italian deejay / producer to be the first one. The reason was simple. Amex was the first, ever producing deejay that joined TotaalFM and became a kind of pioneer for us. We are very glad he accepted the interview you can read down below.
ArCee.

1) TotaalFM: At what age, for as far as you can go back, did you become seriously involved in dance music?

Amex: I did my first step into dance music some years ago, just after the new millennium was started… a friend of mine had a big passion for italo dance and trance music, and as he started to pass me some songs, I totally felt in love for those balearic and emotionals sounds, becoming immediately a big fan of everything called Trance. I remember when, under the rain, we did thirty Km on our scooter to go to the music shop for buying trance vinyls!!!

2) TotaalFM: What are the most big influences in your deejay and or producer career?

Amex: When I’m sitting in studio working on a track or when I’m playing in a club, I think that it’s all about the feelings between the music and the people. That's why I don’t think my music can be described just with a tag, I really enjoy to work on different things, but the final aim is always the connection with the listeners and the clubbers!

3) TotaalFM: Lots of times people think in little corners, like wanting to place a label at a deejay. For example, saying you are a progressive, uplifting or tech trance deejay. Most of the trance deejays I know don’t see themselves that way, but if you have to given yourself a label, what label would you give your self in style?

Amex: Ahaha good question this one! Well, if you see how my sound is evolving, I think that my natural label could be Black Hole or Coldharbour, and I’ve too some stuff coming up there so… I’m really into deep and progressive sounds, if you ever had a listen to my Analog Vibes radio show you know what I mean!

4) TotaalFM: What a producer or artist you would like to do a project together with, or maybe do a remix for?

Amex: I’m a big fan of the great duo First State, I love every production they do, so I can say my point goes for Sander and Ralphie. But out there are plenty of good guys I’d like to work with, I find very interesting working with people from all the world, you can learn a lot every time!

5) TotaalFM: Trance started in Holland and is now moving all over the world as 1 of the leading dance sounds in the world. What are the big changes in trance you experience today?

Amex: I think probably trance become a bit too “mainstream”, but I don’t think that’s a problem at all. I can see people in every trance festival around the world dancing and having fun, it’s something I can’t imagine with another genre of electronic music. Trance is more then a music style, it’s a big community, and that’s the right spirit and that’s why trance is still alive.

6) TotaalFM: One of the major powers of trance is, it’s constantly changing and developing. It started with real classical tunes and nowadays more and more real instruments and vocals are being used in trance. Where do you think this will take us and what styles will be become mainstream in the future?

Amex: : I think trance is evolving in these years in two directions: we can find some interesting stuffs, I can just do the name of Schulz’s Toronto compilation, where the finest trance and progressive find their natural home for a long-time listen cd, and then there are lot of cheese and vocal tunes, that probably bring lot of money to the labels but that in my opinion really kill the genre and the Trance name. Anyway EDM music always manages to surprise me, and to be honest there are lot of cool songs around in this period, so I can’t really complain =)

7) TotaalFM: Radio is pretty important for deejays and producers. You were of the first “well known deejay / producers” playing at TotaalFM, even dropped After Hours, the biggest dance station at the internet for it. What does TotaalFM mean for you?

Amex: I was on AfterhoursFM since 2006, and I discovered TotaalFM thanks to Marco Js, that asked me if I was up to have a radio show there. So for a while I had two different shows, one on TotaalFM and one on AHfm, but in the end I made my choice and TotaalFM became my only radio station. I’ve a great connection with Rene, I don’t want to say the same things but when I think to TotaalFM I don’t think just to a radio station or a way to do business and make my name bigger, but I think to a big family, where you can share not only your music passion but everything about life. That’s why probably I had chosen in the end to be on TotaalFM! And honestly in this last year the radio has never stopped to grown up, and this thanks to the hard work of all the TotaalFM Team, so a huge thanks to them! Future will shine for TotaalFM, that’s sure!

8 ) TotaalFM: What are your plans and hopes for the future and what kind of surprises can we expect from you?

Amex: I just got me degree (finally!!!), so I’m working a lot in studio lately! I’ve two new releases on Shah Music, and two collaborations, one with Fast Distance and another with Element One (a fantastic producer from Miami, check his tune on Markus Schulz’s Toronto 09 Compilation!) that will find soon a home. As for productions, I’ve also some remixes coming up, especially one for Black Hole Recordings. The original track is a great vocal progressive tune made by two guys from Ukraine, Smart Apes, watch out for these guys because they will surprise you!

9) TotaalFM: Do you have any hopes for Italy that trance is gonna grow bigger there in the future?

Amex: Honestly? No. I think Italy misses a real club culture. Without that, you can organize big events, you can bring Tiesto or Armin Van Buuren and made the club packed, and the day after nobody will remember who played the last night. It’s all about music culture, England for example, or Poland, have a big club culture, and that’s why trance events there always work. Anyway Italy has his trance event, it’s called Trance Gate, and its owned by my good mate Gianluca Ferrandu! The location is Milan and they always bring great trance dj’s, so at least we have a monthly trance event, better then nothing!

Thank you for this short interview Amex for TotaalFM. Amex can be heard at TotaalFM every Monday from 22.00 – 24.00 hours, c.e.t with his excellent show Analog Vibes.

Next month, a exclusive interview with: Eric Abbot!

TotaalFM deejay intervieuw: Eric Abbot:

http://forum.totaalfm.com/viewtopic.php?f=206&t=2947

Post?Interview of the Month: Eric Abbot.
TFM interview of the month: TotaalFM Resident Eric Abbot..

1. TotaalFM: Eric, first of all, thank you for making some time to have this interview. It has been a little while since you have been playing new shows at TotaalFM, what have you been doing?
Eric:

It has indeed been a while since I was able to upload some new mixes. The reason is my girlfriend and I bought a new house in April 2008. It is a newly build one and we received the keys in march 2009. My gear has been boxed for say one and half month, I really felt sorry for them. But they now have a fresh home, they have more space in a new room, so I?m sure they feel happy now. And so do I because since end of April I?m spinning again!

2. TotaalFM: How did you get involved in dance or trance music and when?
Eric:

I have always been a fan of dance music, I think it started in my youth where I discovered music in general. I had a buddy in the city where I grew up, who had two turntables and a Gemini mixer. I often spent some time with spinning his records. Of course at that time it sounded like crap, but hey everybody has to start somewhere.
Since then until this very moment I have been listening to dance music. I have never been someone who went to dance parties a lot, but I have gone to all 3 parts of Tiesto in the Gelredome (of course, I had to since I live in Arnhem) and I think that has encouraged me to do more with dj-ing.

3. TotaalFM: People are always talking about styles and sub styles, even categories. Where would we see you if you had to pick 1 and why?
Eric:

I have recently posted a message on the forum in which I ask for advice on this subject, so this is an interesting question. My first mix that I ever made is the Institutional Essence, named after theory used in the Mastherthesis of my girlfriend. This mix is the true style of mixes I like to make and so records I like to spin. It is trance, but very relaxing (low bpm), with a lot of emotions in it. It combines with very progressive tunes. The tracks I download on beatport for these mixes often have the category progressive house & trance. So in this case I would define my style as progressive trance  .I have experienced with some harder trance, but although the banging is nice to hear on parties, I like it less to spin myself.
A year ago, in January 2008, I went with friends to Awakenings in Klokgebouw Eindhoven. There is where I discovered the techno music. I immediately loved it and I can explain why. What I find in the progressive trance music and in the techno music is the ongoing effect, tunes that never stop. I love continuation of tunes combined with repeated electronic sounds. Hard to explain, but I hope it?s a little clear.

4. TotaalFM: Nowadays, to make it as a professional deejay you also must produce. Are you looking in that direction to?
Eric:

This is where I wish a day would exist of 48 hours instead of 24. I would really love to produce. And without being arrogant, I think I would be good in it too! But there is just no time. I have a busy job as advisor in spatial planning and have always a lot of things in my mind that I want to do. I sometimes hardly find the time to make a mix every week. This is the reason why I also stopped with Trance Taztic on TFM. There was just no time to produce 3 hours of mixing every week.
I have installed fruity loops once, and discovered the program. Technology has developed in the past years, I was used to Fasttracker back in the days . Anyways, I soon saw that figuring out the program and starting with producing would cost me a lot of time. You just can?t start producing out of the box. You need to read articles, buy a book, and the go for the right equipment and step by step build up your knowledge? maybe, in future. I hope.. Because I do see that to become a more famous and professional deejay, producing must be part of your skills.

5. TotaalFM: Who are your ?hero?s? and who would you like to work with for 1 time? Playing a set together or maybe producing something together?
Eric:

There are not really heroes that I like to work with. I admire all producers that find the drive to produce new tunes over and over. The same for the dj?s around the world that spin records in the clubs, night after night. As on my current stage of spinning, there is no wish to work with a specific dj or producer yet. I do follow a bunch of specific producers to check out the records they make.

6. TotaalFM: You did play at the first Luminosity event ever. They also invited you for the second to do a back 2 back set but you refused, why?
Eric

My first live experience was indeed the Luminosity party in the Poema?s, Utrecht. An awesome first party for Luminosity and a rich evening for me. I?m still thankful for the opportunity they gave me. Luminosity continued with their parties, and indeed, they asked me to do a back 2 back set for the second event. And I refused.. yes I refused. 2 simple reasons made me make that choice. First of all, I do not have much experience in live performing and I my opinion experience is what you need to be able to do a back 2 back set. Second is that the use of back 2 back set didn?t feel right to me that as a way to give new dj?s as much as opportunities to play live as possible. Playing live alone is already a though job, it is even harder together. So I would rather see new dj?s pick up their live experience by a full set alone. But hey, I?m no organizer of parties, so what am I talking about?

7. TotaalFM: Howe did you get involved with TotaalFM, how do you feel about it and what should become better in the next times to come in your opinion?
Eric:

I was active on the site of puretrancers.com, where I also sent in a demo for a contest. It was on these forums that ArCee contacted me and asked me if I was interested to play sets on the radio. I immediately was enthusiastic, and, still am. It is a great way for me to make sure I?m spinning records enough (a set has to be made every week) and a nice way to get and stay in contact with the scene. I think TFM is doing a great job, taking a lot of time and effort of the people behind it. But it is worth it, I have the idea it is a well respected radio station. For the future I think TFM needs to focus more on their listeners instead of the dj?s. The new website is a big step forward in this. I personally would love to be able to communicate with the listeners of my radio shows. Now there is hardly any feedback on it, and I?m sure that feedback would encourage me to make even better mixes.

8. TotaalFM: How important do you think radio is for upcoming deejays, but also already well known deejays?
Eric:

To start with the well-known deejays, Tiesto?s Club-Life is an excellent example. Although I have stopped listening to it for a while ago, it is a really nice radio show. For well-known dj?s as Tiesto it is the opportunity to bind the fans and to spin some of the latest new found records. I think the fans see this as an opportunity to follow their idol. Of course, I will never forget Tiesto spinning a part of my mix ?The Institutional Essence? in the 15 minutes of fame. Still get goose bumps hearing it. For upcoming deejays, radio shows are an important ?tool? to get known in the scene. I think a lot of people would rather tune in to radio stations these days, then download mixes from unknown dj?s. And the audience that can be reached is enormous. So yes, I would advice all upcoming dj?s to find a radio station where they can bring their mixes on air!

9. TotaalFM: Finally, where, do you hope, will you find or see yourself in about 3 years from now? Any dreams, hopes or ideas you want to come true the next years to come?
Eric:

I have just one dream: playing for an outrageous crowd and just have those goose bumps for a full set. Maybe.. maybe in near future. We will see!

Thank you very much for your time Eric and we hope to hear some new awesome sets again at TotaalFM.com.
Eric Abbot plays ?Monk Sessions, every Friday from 20.00 ? 21.00 hours (cet) at TotaalFM.com.

TFM interview of the month: Ernesto & Bastian.

1.TFM: Guys, first of all, thank you for giving us the opportunity to have this interview with you. You?ve been working together for some time now. Why did you start as a duo and what is the big advantage of that? And the downsides?

E & B: Hi mate your welkom, good to have a chat with you.
We start working together in the year 2000, the big advantage is that you can share you knollege together and trancelate this into the music we make and play, 2 minds know more then one, we dont see the downsides in this..exept some fights now and then?

2. TFM: There is a worldwide crises going on at the moment. I had read at TV that also artists are effected by it because of less and less bookings. Can you already see it happening with your bookings or heard it by other deejays maybe?

E & B: Bookings still going strong and traveling around the world at the moment, but yes we hear and see that the fee?s are not paid as easy as in years before.
Our Agent Fleur Kemp @ Globaltwistmusic.com is doing a great job and always talks with the promotors to come up with the right deal for them, also for the ?smaller clubs and events?

3. TFM: Talking about crises, with the internet developing, record sale for producers has dropped down like crazy. Is there any future in record sale and also, are things upside down now? Meaning, years ago the big money came from record sale and playing a gig was something extra and promotional and now it is the other way around, the most money comes from gigs?

E & B: Its still a combination, record sales are coming stronger by all legal download sites like beatport, audiojelly and trackitdown to name a few, you still have the cd compillations, airplays on worldwide radio stations etc. The ?Big? records are still making good money but yes its a lot less then in years before.
The dj gigs are a good compisation, but still no millions on the bank hehe

4. TFM: In deejay duo?s you see more and more they split up after some time or they start developing single projects. Are there in your case any developments to be expected that you are maybe gonna do some solo things and if you do, would the both of you go in another direction?

E & B: We keep on working together, we have the similar taste in music and want to share this with all of you, but yes also some new projects are seeing daylight this year. This means no change in the taste for music or styles. Good grooves and floating atmospheres thats what we like...Trance 

5. TFM: Trance is, according to some, not mainstream anymore in the Netherlands. Do you see this as a bad or good development and why?

E & B. The sound of trance in changing yes, but see this as a good thing, back in the underground, the clubs and the real ppl that love this from the hart are back on the dancefloors, so a good development.

6. TFM: You applied for a show at TFM Radio yourselves months ago. How did you get to know TFM Radio and what made you decide you wanted become a part of it with so many stations at the internet at this time?

E & B: TFM is for us a professional partner to air our radio show The Next Level.
The guys behind it ?You? running the station from the hart in a good way, and thats what we like and joined it.

7. TFM: If we look at listeners raids for TFM Radio, the most important country?s for TFM are: Netherlands, Italy, Poland, U.S.A and Mexico coming up strong. Can you also see this back in bookings or at least interest in this country?s for your music as a sort of upcoming or growing market? Do you think there is a kind of shift from one country to another going on?

E&B: Actualy we are playing all over the world, but every year new countrys come up, like this year we preform for the first time in Australia & Turkey but also going back to Poland, play a lot in our home country Holland, still waiting for Italy and Mexico as you mention  and all other countrys with the ppl that loves our sound, we want to meet and see m all 

8. TFM: Quote from myspace: ?Ernesto provides the DJ talent that is essential to entertaining thousands, with Bastian taking control of the producing and creative side.? In what level does Ernesto mix into the producing, and Bastian into the livesets?

E&B: Thats realy easy, we both discuss them, and help, but as the sentence tells, Ernesto is the DJ mind and Bastian more the producer mind, combine this and you get the sound of EvsB.

9. TFM: What do you prefer, thousands of people on a festival, or a 1000 man club?
(and why?)

E & B: Both  its diverend but both the best thing to do in life, to see and hear the sound of a big crowd going wild brings us shivers, but also the vibe of a intimate club is soo cool, ppl can come mutch closer, shake hands or even do a record request, this impossible on the big event, like doing this both, so no prefer in this.

10. TFM: Final Question before you become crazy of it haha. What can we expect for the next times to come of Ernesto & Bastian producer wise? Many deejays switch to progressive trance, is this something you look at to and do you think the future of trance is in that corner or will you hang on to your own sound?

E & B: As we told before, the music changes, and you have to be upfront in this.
We always stand for our own style, do this with diverend sounds etc. We like to do and make good ?Floor? tracks, good club and festival vibes in it.
New EvsB is ready and will start promotion soon  again a track with a big lead and hands in the air moment, keep ya ears open for this one 
Soon released on High Contract recordings.

TFM: Any last words or things you want to share with the listeners or fans maybe:

E & B: Thanks everybody for the support in our tracks, radio show and gigs, hope to see you all at a place near you soon, stay healthy, make love and listen good music. 

Guys, thank you so much for your time and really great talking to you. For those that don?t know it, I can hardly believe, Ernesto and Bastian play ?The next level? radio show at TFM Radio show every Thursday from 15.00 till 18.00 hours and a rerun for the other time zones from 03.00 ? 06.00 at Friday morning.

E & B: Thank you 2 mate, enjoy the trip 

Next month: An exclusive interview with TFM Resident Cristian Ketelaars.

Leuk interview, maar misschien is het een tip om het nog eens te laten nalezen door iemand die goed engels kan.

Er staan redelijk wat taal en spelling fouten in, en ook nog wat kromme zinnen.
Play that funky music white boy....
