Hi!,

Does anyone knows why Pioneer single CD players don't have individual pitch bend buttons? that would be very handy if you want to keep the Jog in Vinyl mode.

Thanks!

Those buttons are the Denon-Way Winking my eye.... Pioneer was the first ever to introduce a jogwheel on a CD player to apply a pitch bend and they hold on to that principle. But look at the CMX-3000, this is a model that has pitch bend buttons. So Pioneer is not agains it, but Pioneer users perhaps don't need buttons, they use a wheel :D

And I like the Pioneer Way! Denon has already copied this feature, but in my opinion without succes: when you bend very much (fast turns) and then stop bending, the player bends a little bit more (slowly going to normal speed). This is not very handy, because you have to bend a bit less than you normally would.

Shoot me if i'm wrong (it's my experience with the DN-D4000 en DN-D6000 only).

Well, I must say that the Pioneer way is ok. But when mixing on the CMX-3000 I use the buttons a lot, because the jog wheel on the CMX-3000 is not as sensitive as that of the CDJ-800. With that I mean, u'll have to spin the wheel more to get the same result as on the CDJ-800.

But on the CDJ-800 the buttons aren't needed, because the jog is acurate enough to do the job.

Very seldom I use the pitch bend buttons anymore. I practised a lot with starting on time and pitch fader only correcting. For the rest I use the back cue function a lot if things go wrong when I'm monitoring. But of course you also could do nice pitch effects with the buttons or jog dial.

if you have your Jog in vinyl mode, you can still perform a jog bend by turning the jog on the outside; as long as you do not touch the top platter playback is not halted.

I own two S3500s and have absolutely no trouble with that. Bending the platter works fine just like it does with Pioneer and those two buttons are in fact quite handy for quick corrections if needed.

Why Pioneer is not using the best of both world? I don't know.

Actually, the S3500 (and 3000 and 5000) offers three ways of pitch bending:

1. slowing down the rotating platter (like a vinyl turntable)

2. turning the platter by hand (while platter is in static mode): this is the Pioneer way

3. pitch bend buttons

It's what Lead said, Pioneer is using a joy wheel for pitch bend.

Why should you add two more knobs on the cd player if it isn't necesarry?

On a turntables you don't find pitch bend buttons also...

Or they just did not think about it like Denon did... On turntables you can not play the record in reversed mode either, so if it isn't there it doesn't mean it isn't necessary. Besides that "useful" is a better word than "necessary" in this case.

well i completely dont see the use in pitch bend buttons if you have a much more sensitive and easy to control jog... the only thing they do is crowd up the CDJ and disturb the simplicity that many people love Pioneer for
Ramon72    posted on 15-03-2006 15:34
Obviously that depends on what you prefer. Sometimes I wish Pioneer had those buttons too. Especially when you are mixing dance classics produced without a drumcomputer and thus a variable BPM.

pioneer does it right like on a turntable touching the side of the wheel is very much the same as touching the side of the platter on a 1200
Camino    posted on 12-04-2006 23:43
huh? i'd say the absolute opposite.... when it comes to a comparison between denon (spinning platter), technics (spinning platter), and the numark CDX (spinning platter) - the Pioneer is the LEAST like a turntable in how you bend the pitch. Not that its a bad thing ofcourse...

I think he's talking about the shape of the outside...
